ISLAMABAD: In an effort to cut fuel costs and promote environmentally friendly policing, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday handed over 50 new electric vehicles (EVs) to Islamabad Police, which officials said would save about Rs 34 million a month.

Speaking at a ceremony, the prime minister said protecting the lives and property of citizens was the government’s foremost priority.

“The government is providing all possible resources to bring the Islamabad Police in line with the requirements of modern policing,” he said.

Sharif praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for his efforts to modernise the Islamabad Police and handed the vehicle keys to him.

He said the Islamabad Police should serve as a role model for other cities across the country, adding that the force was being equipped with modern technology, equipment and other necessary resources to provide citizens with a safe environment.

The provision of the electric vehicles aims to promote environmentally friendly and green policing, Sharif said, adding that the use of modern technology would further improve police performance and services provided to citizens.

During a briefing, Inspector General Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi told the prime minister about the newly established Capital Patrol force, set up to ensure security in the federal capital.

Rizvi said the force had been established in line with his vision of a safe, smart and green capital and would comprise 200 police personnel.

Each Capital Patrol unit will include one male and one female police officer, while motorcycle-riding officers will also form part of the force to ensure rapid response and effective patrolling in different areas.

All Capital Patrol personnel will be equipped with body cameras to enhance transparency, monitoring and accountability in policing, Rizvi said.
