LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has paid tribute to all those pursuing knowledge and every individual engaged in teaching and promoting education on the occasion of International Literacy Day.
In her message, the chief minister said that the passion and quest for knowledge and learning were integral to our beliefs. “Knowing and learning is the right of every conscious individual, and we will ensure that this right is fulfilled in every possible way,” she said.
Providing literacy opportunities for every citizen to ensure their development and prosperity is the foremost responsibility of the government, she added.
The chief minister said the day, being observed under the theme “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity,” carried special significance. She stressed that promotion of literacy could not be achieved without making it an individual, national and global priority. “Special attention is being paid to the digital literacy of the younger generation in Punjab to equip them with the skills needed to meet the demands of the modern era,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz said innovative initiatives such as the School Meal Programme were rapidly creating awareness about literacy in underprivileged areas of Punjab. She said literacy did not merely mean the ability to read books; acquiring skills and technical knowledge in line with the requirements of the modern age was also an essential component of literacy.
The chief minister said every member of society would have to play a proactive role in achieving the goals of promoting literacy.
