Landhi Export Processing Zone unit catches fire

Published Updated

KARACHI: A fire broke out at a factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone on Monday, with the blaze intensifying rapidly and thick black smoke visible from a distance.

Rescue agencies and Fire Brigade officials reached the site after receiving information about the incident. Eight fire tenders are currently engaged in efforts to bring the fire under control, while measures are being taken to prevent it from spreading to nearby factories.

Fire Brigade officials have classified the fire as a third-degree blaze.

The Fire Brigade has sought immediate assistance from the Water Corporation. On the directives of CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, an emergency was declared at the Landhi and Sherpao hydrants, according to the Water Corporation spokesperson.

The Water Corporation immediately dispatched water tankers to the site, while the in-charge of the Hydrants Cell remained in contact with Fire Brigade and rescue officials.

The CEO’s focal person for the Hydrants Cell is personally monitoring the operation, the spokesperson said.

An uninterrupted water supply to the Fire Brigade is being ensured during the firefighting operation, while the Water Corporation is extending full cooperation to rescue agencies.

The spokesperson said the supply of water tankers would continue until the fire was completely brought under control.

Meanwhile, a K-Electric spokesperson described the fire incident at the Landhi factory as “deeply tragic.”

A K-Electric team is present at the site to support the local administration in relief and emergency response efforts, the spokesperson said.

“KE’s infrastructure remains safe and unaffected,” the spokesperson added.
