ISLAMABAD: Mufti Abdul Rahim, head of Jamia Tur Rasheed, met Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Saturday to discuss education reforms, curriculum improvement, integration of religious and modern education, research and knowledge creation, youth character-building, and the role of education in national development.

Professor Ahsan Iqbal said the government was working to develop a modern, comprehensive and values-based education system that would equip young people with contemporary knowledge, research capabilities and practical skills while ensuring their moral, intellectual and cultural development.

He said universities and religious seminaries must come together on a common platform and contribute to national development in accordance with Islamic principles and values.

Pakistan, he added, needed an education system that combined ethical and religious training with modern science, technology, research and innovation.

Iqbal said Islam encourages knowledge, research, observation, reflection and critical thinking.

He noted that the Muslim world had once led the fields of scholarship and research, with Muslim scholars making significant contributions to astronomy, medicine, mathematics, geography and other disciplines.
