KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples’ Party-Sindh General Secretary Senator Waqar Mehdi on Sunday strongly criticised MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal over his remarks on Sindh’s administrative status and accused him of using the issue to revive a declining political position.
Mehdi said MQM-P politics had historically revolved around political interests and alleged that the party had previously called for Karachi to be handed over to the federal government when development work was slow. Now, the party leadership had been advocating for the division of Sindh, while development activity in the city had accelerated.
He questioned why Karachi had not been handed over to the federation when the city was facing violence, extortion, killings and arson in the past. “Those who contributed to the destruction of Karachi are now talking about new administrative units and the survival of the country,” Mehdi said.
Mehdi claimed the PPP government had restored peace in Karachi, eliminated no-go areas and promoted development, tolerance and harmony in the city. Mehdi urged Kamal to focus on what he described as the “failed and negative politics” of his own party rather than misleading the public over the issue of Sindh’s division.
He warned that any attempt to undermine Sindh’s territorial integrity or its resources would be resisted, saying political demands should be pursued strictly within the framework of the Constitution and law.
Mehdi said, “The PPP believes in transferring political powers to the grassroots and does not need certificates of patriotism from any political party.” He described Kamal’s statements as an unsuccessful attempt to shore up his political standing, accusing those advocating the division of Sindh of fighting for their own political survival.
PPP senior leader said the people of Sindh were capable of distinguishing between genuine public service and political rhetoric, and reiterated that the PPP would continue its development and public welfare work across Karachi and the province.
