ISLAMABAD: The embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday decided to approach the Supreme Court over the government’s alleged failure to implement its order for former prime minister Imran Khan’s medical examination at Shifa International Hospital.

At a joint parliamentary meeting of the PTI and opposition parties, chaired by Opposition Leader in National Assembly Mehmood Khan Achakzai, participants alleged that authorities had returned Khan to jail after a “formal” check-up at PIMS instead of having him examined at Shifa International Hospital.

The meeting expressed serious concern over Khan’s health and treatment, alleging that the government had flouted the Supreme Court’s directions, which the participants said amounted to contempt of court.

The opposition decided to pursue legal and constitutional remedies and approach the apex court over the alleged non-compliance.

The meeting also reaffirmed the PTI’s decision to hold a “full-fledged” protest on September 27. Participants discussed the proposed protest and long march and agreed to invite all opposition parties to join the mobilisation.

The opposition further agreed to intensify its public-contact campaign across the country, particularly in Punjab, and to coordinate political and parliamentary activities through mutual consultation.

The meeting endorsed the formation of a grand opposition alliance and agreed to make it more active and organised.

Participants welcomed the participation of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other opposition parties.

The participants said the alliance would strengthen the opposition’s voice in Parliament and among the public, while reiterating their commitment to the Constitution, democracy, rule of law and parliamentary principles.
