ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to initiate a countrywide crackdown on illegal call centres following the discovery of a global network allegedly involved in cyber fraud and obscene content.
According official sources, a task force has been established to take action against illegal call centres operating in various parts of the country.
The task force consists of sensitive institutions, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and other relevant agencies. The federal police and district administrations have also been made part of the task force, they said.
They said the task force will operate under the supervision of the FIA headquarters, while details of operations against illegal call centres will be submitted to the Ministry of Interior on a daily basis.
According to sources, the task force will investigate cases involving extortion, blackmailing, gambling and online skimming.
A list of call centres operating in Karachi has also been prepared, sources said, adding that all relevant institutions have been directed to extend full cooperation to the task force.
