KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has ordered the expansion of a solar street-lighting project to major roads across the city.

KMC officials described as positive results from installations already completed.

Wahab directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to begin work on additional important roads, saying solar-powered lighting would reduce electricity consumption while providing residents with more reliable illumination.

Work to convert streetlights along Shahrah-e-Saadi to solar energy is already progressing, with installations on other major roads expected to begin in the coming days.

“Converting streetlights on important roads to solar energy will not only save electricity but provide citizens with better and uninterrupted lighting facilities,” Wahab said. He directed KMC departments to complete ongoing installations within the stipulated timeframe and prepare a comprehensive plan for gradually converting additional roads to solar power.

The Mayor said the initiative was part of broader efforts to introduce modern, environmentally friendly and sustainable systems in Karachi while reducing energy-related costs.

KMC said the expanded solar-lighting programme would focus on major routes where reliable street lighting is particularly important for commuters and public safety.
