Punjab to increase underground water tanks

Published Updated

LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique has said that under the Punjab Development Program (PDP), 90 out of 110 underground water tanks approved for 51 cities have been completed so far, while 88 out of 124 drains have been 100 percent completed.

While presiding over a review meeting on Tuesday, he said the immediate drainage of rainwater in areas with water tanks has been of great help. “Based on the success of this experiment, it has been decided to increase the number of storage tanks,” he revealed.

The meeting was attended by Punjab Local Government Secretary Zaid Bin Maqsood, Special Secretary Shahid Zaman Lak, Additional Secretary Mehreen Fahim Abbasi, concerned Municipal Officers (Infrastructure) and Assistant Project Directors through video link.

The Minister expressed the hope that further improvements would be made in the next phase by connecting underground water tanks to drains and constructing disposal stations.

He directed the dewatering of storage tanks after every rain, saying that the work should be carried out keeping in mind the alert of new spells of rain. The meeting also reviewed the impact of the recent transporters’ strike on the supply of goods.
