Scholarship programme: 209 students selected for Hungarian universities

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has sent off 209 Pakistani students selected for scholarships at leading Hungarian universities under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, marking the 11th batch of Pakistani scholars under the initiative.

Around 26,000 Pakistani students applied for scholarships this year, highlighting the growing demand among Pakistani youth for international higher education opportunities. With the selection of 209 scholars for the 2026 academic year, the number of Pakistani students awarded scholarships under the programme since its launch in 2016 has risen to 1,636.

HEC Chairman Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar was the chief guest at the pre-departure ceremony. Executive Director HEC Dr Zia Ul Haq, Deputy Head of Mission at the Hungarian Embassy Dr Dora Gunsberger, Director General HRD/Global Engagement Divisions HEC Aayesha Ikram, Rector Air University Air Marshal Dr Abdul Moeed Khan (Retd), representatives of higher education institutions, faculty members, parents, and programme alumni also attended.

Addressing the students, Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar urged them to abide by Hungarian laws and make the most of the academic, cultural and research opportunities available to them. He encouraged the scholars to return to Pakistan equipped with knowledge and international experience that could contribute to the country’s development.

The HEC chairman praised the standard of Hungarian universities and thanked the Hungarian government and its embassy for their continued support for Pakistani students. He also acknowledged the role of parents and educational institutions in preparing the scholarship recipients.

Dr Akhtar said Pakistani students and researchers were increasingly gaining recognition at prestigious international universities and institutions, demonstrating the potential of the country’s human resources. He also highlighted Pakistan’s position as the leading recipient of Erasmus Mundus scholarships for the fifth consecutive year, describing the achievement as evidence of the talent and potential of Pakistani youth.

Dr Dora Gunsberger said the ceremony provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the new scholars but also to recognise the achievements of the Stipendium Hungaricum programme over the past decade. She advised the students to establish clear goals, remain committed to their studies, and make full use of their experience in Hungary.
