KARACHI: Like years past, Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm on Friday at Madinat-al-Hikmah, the main campus of Hamdard Schools and Hamdard University. Thousands of students and faculty members attended the events held to commemorate the auspicious day.
The day began on the campus with a thoughtfully organised event at which the national flag was raised. Soon afterwards, students from Hamdard Public School (HPS), Hamdard Village School (HVS), Hamdard Intermediate College and Hamdard College of Technology made speeches, sang national songs and presented colourful tableaux.
The chief guest was Dr Babar Khan, an alumnus of HPS and director for Inland Revenue with the Sindh government. The president of Hamdard Foundation and chancellor of Hamdard University, Madam Sadia Rashid (Hilal-e-Imtiaz), also graced the occasion, as did the vice chancellor of the university, Prof Dr Imran Amin.
Faisal Nadeem Mangoria, group head for finance, Syed Muhammad Arsalan, head for HR, deans of the university, principals of the Hamdard group of institutions and heads of other departments were also present.
In their speeches, the students pointed out that celebrating the day is not enough. Rather, the nation as a whole should pledge to fulfil its responsibilities and take the country to greater heights as per the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Later, Madam Sadia Rashid (HI), Prof Dr Imran Amin and other prominent personalities visited the mausoleum of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, the founder of Hamdard Group of Organisations, to lay a floral wreath and offer Fateha there.
Later still, a special event was held in the main auditorium of Hamdard University, where prizes were distributed among the students who won the competitions held in the run-up to 14th August. Noteworthy competitions held in this connection were Essay Writing Competition and Speech Contest. The theme of both the competitions was “Jashn-e-Azadi: Maarka-e-Haq se Taamir-e-Pakistan.” Some sports competitions were also held.
Students of the university also presented a variety programme and a tableau.
