KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) celebrated Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day on Friday, with its Karachi Chief Monem Zafar Khan urging the youth to renew their commitment to building the nation and work towards fulfilling the vision behind the country’s creation.
Speaking at a flag-hoisting ceremony at Idara Noor-i-Haq, Monem Zafar said August 14 was not only a day to celebrate independence but also an occasion to renew the national pledge as Pakistan entered its 80th year after completing 79 years of independence.
He said that although three generations had grown up in an independent Pakistan, the purpose and ideology behind the country’s creation had yet to be fulfilled.
“Pakistan is not merely the name of a geographical region; it represents an ideology and a great purpose,” he said.
He said the growing trust deficit between the state and its citizens, unrest and frustration in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, and continuing problems related to peace, employment, education and healthcare required serious reflection.
Monem Zafar said the continuing burden of taxes, including the petroleum levy, on the people also called for a review of the country’s national goals and responsibilities instead of limiting Independence Day celebrations to festivities.
“Pakistan was not created for the domination of a few classes or for the absence of constitutional supremacy. It was established to create an Islamic, welfare-oriented and sovereign state where people could enjoy peace, justice, security and basic rights,” he said.
He urged the people, particularly the youth, to renew their resolve to make Pakistan live up to what he described as its true ideology and intensify their efforts to achieve that goal.
Monem Zafar hoisted the national flag at Idara Noor-i-Haq, after which the national anthem was played. The ceremony was attended by his special assistant Burjees Ahmed, Karachi vice chiefs Muslim Pervez and Raja Arif Sultan, deputy secretaries Rashid Qureshi and Younus Barai, Jinnah Town Chairman Rizwan Abdul Samad, JI Minority Wing Karachi president Advocate Younus Sohon Khan and other party leaders and workers.
