KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Friday called for national unity, continuous service to the country and collective efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s sovereignty, stability and prosperity, while speaking at flag hoisting ceremony marking Independence Day at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s headquarters.
Mayor congratulated the nation and Pakistanis living around the world on Independence Day. Freedom is a great blessing from Almighty Allah.
Elected representatives, City Council members and KMC employees attended the meeting.
The Mayor said Independence Day conveyed a message of love and loyalty to the country and called upon citizens to play a practical role in national development.
“The joy of freedom should not be confined to August 14. The entire nation should work throughout the year with a spirit of service and commitment to the country’s honour and progress,” he asserted.
Wahab said Pakistan’s development, stability and prosperity required the nation to remain united by following the principles of faith, unity and conviction.
He said the Pakistani nation would collectively resist any attempt against the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and would stand “like a strong wall” in defence of the homeland.
The Mayor said Independence Day was also a reminder of the unparalleled sacrifices and struggle of the country’s founding fathers.
“It is a day to renew our resolve for unity, sacrifice, struggle and loyalty to the homeland.”
Protecting freedom and recognising its value was a collective national responsibility, he said.
He noted that national development is possible only when every citizen plays a role in nation-building.
