Announcement of LG polls date: ECP contacts Punjab govt to form body for consultations
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reached out to Punjab government for constituting a committee of the provincial cabinet in order to hold consultations between the provincial government and the electoral body to finalise a date for the local government elections in Pakistan’s largest province.
In this regard, a letter, written on Monday, from the ECP’s Additional Director General Local Government Elections (LGE) Nadeem Qasim to Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman, stated that the electoral body desired to constitute the said committee well before the consultative meeting between the ECP and the provincial government for consultations on the announcement of LG polls date.
The letter read that the said consultative meeting was scheduled at the ECP Secretariat on the coming 20th August.
The Section 219(3) of the Elections Act, 2017 provides that the ECP shall, in consultation with the federal or the provincial government concerned, make an announcement of the date or dates on which the elections to a local government shall be conducted in a province, a cantonment or the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
