ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday directed the Safe City Headquarters to immediately finalize the Safe City Bill for presentation before the National Assembly.
Flanked by State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Naqvi directed the authorities to complete the setting up of the state-of-the-art Fusion Centre for Islamabad Safe City within the next three months.
During the meeting, the high-ups of Islamabad Safe City briefed the ministers about the safe city expansion project. The official said that so far 85 percent of the work on the expansion project has been completed. As many as 415 kilometres of optical fibre have been laid, while work on the data centre, cyber architecture, and cybersecurity infrastructure has reached 80 percent completion, he said.
Naqvi directed the officials concerned to complete the Safe City expansion project by September 30. He said the government’s objective is to transform Islamabad Safe City into a modern, smart, and world-class institution comparable to those in developed countries.
“The advanced technology-based Safe City system will ensure enhanced public safety, effective surveillance, and rapid emergency response,” Naqvi said.
The Islamabad Safe City Project was inaugurated by former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in 2016 for Rs6 billion, which covers only 35 per cent of critical areas. Nearly 1,950 surveillance cameras had been installed across the city at the start of the project.
Later, the number of CCTV cameras increased to 3,159. These include Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ), Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and fixed cameras installed in different areas, including the Red Zone, all major entry and exit points, important marketplaces, high-traffic roads, and significant public spaces through continuous 24/7 digital surveillance.
Secretary for the Ministry of Interior, the Director General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), senior Safe City officials, and other relevant officers also attended the meeting.
