LAHORE: The Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has appreciated and expressed its full support for the Balochistan government’s initiative to develop a low-cost housing scheme for Gwadar’s fishing community, describing it as a landmark step towards inclusive development, social welfare, and the long-term success of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The provincial government has initiated the demarcation of land for the project which aims to provide affordable housing to low-income fishermen in Gwadar. The housing scheme, estimated to cost Rs 2.44 billion, will be developed on more than 200 acres of land allocated by the government of Balochistan.
Situated near the intersection of Jiwani and Awaran Avenues, close to the Gwadar Sports Complex, the project will include approximately 2,970 residential plots, each measuring 120 square yards, for eligible fishermen and their families.
Nazir Hussain, President, and other representatives of PCJCCI, in a joint statement stated that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of CPEC and Gwadar’s development directly reach the local population.
He said providing secure and affordable housing to fishermen will improve their quality of life, strengthen social stability, and create an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth. Inclusive development is essential for transforming Gwadar into a modern international port city where local communities become active stakeholders in economic progress, he added.
Amir Ali, Vice President PCJCCI, remarked that adequate housing is a key component of socio-economic development and will contribute to improving education, healthcare access, and living standards for thousands of families. According to him, well-planned residential communities will complement Gwadar’s expanding infrastructure, attract further investment, and support the city’s emergence as a regional hub for trade, logistics, fisheries, and maritime services.
Adeel Munawar, Commercial Ambassador PCJCCI, observed that the housing project demonstrates how infrastructure development under CPEC can deliver tangible social and economic benefits. He said improving the living conditions of fishermen will strengthen the fisheries sector, enhance productivity, and generate greater economic opportunities for local communities.
Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI, expressed the confidence that such people-centric development projects will not only uplift local livelihoods but also strengthen public confidence in CPEC, promote sustainable urban development, and further enhance Gwadar’s role as Pakistan’s premier maritime, trade, and logistics hub.
