LAHORE: The Punjab Food Safety and Consumer Protection Department has fixed the new wheat release price at Rs3,800 per 40 kilograms with immediate effect.
According to the department’s spokesperson, the decision was approved by the Punjab Cabinet, and a formal notification has been issued the other day.
The spokesperson said the federal government has directed Punjab to purchase wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) under which the province has been approved for the immediate supply of 300,000 metric tons of wheat. Earlier, the Punjab Food Safety Department had already obtained 200,000 metric tons of wheat from PASSCO.
The spokesperson said the procurement price of wheat from PASSCO has been fixed at Rs4,150 per 40 kilograms. The measure is being implemented in accordance with the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) decision of January 28, 2026.
The spokesperson said the initiative aims to ensure a continuous and uninterrupted supply of wheat and flour across the province so that the public does not face any inconvenience.
The spokesperson further stated that improved wheat availability will help stabilize flour prices and ensure the availability of bread at Rs15 per loaf. According to the spokesperson, the Federal Ministry of National Food Security has allocated 533,440 metric tons of wheat to Punjab against the provincial government’s demand for 800,000 metric tons. The Punjab government has also been directed to complete the procurement schedule and advance payment without delay.
