KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi on Saturday launched a 14-day programme to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day. The celebrations began with a tree-planting ceremony at the Governor House under the theme “Pakistan Hamesha Zindabad”.

Planting a sapling to formally open the festivities, the Governor said the campaign aimed to promote patriotism alongside environmental awareness, describing afforestation as a national responsibility in the face of climate change and rapid urbanisation.

He said rising temperatures, erratic rainfall and floods underscored the need to expand green spaces. Indiscriminate tree cutting and unplanned urban development had worsened environmental challenges.
