LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring the supply of safe drinking water to every household across Punjab following the Suthra Punjab initiative, and has sought a foolproof province-wide plan within five days.
The Punjab Saaf Pani Authority (PSPA) would be restructured and upgraded on modern lines, similar to the Suthra Punjab programme. The PSPA would be fully empowered administratively and technically, and equipped with modern technology, human resources and transport facilities.
Chairing a meeting of the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority, the CM directed that efforts to provide safe drinking water to citizens be expedited. The meeting agreed to hire an international consultancy for the initiative, while the latest Japanese and Chinese technologies would be introduced for water purification.
According to the briefing, RO plants and modern filtration plants would be installed according to regional requirements. Plant IDs, operators’ names, contact numbers and operating hours would also be displayed at filtration and RO plants across the province.
The CM directed that all 5,734 water filtration plants be repaired and properly maintained, and ordered the installation of additional plants wherever required. She also directed that the authority’s jurisdiction be expanded to all districts and tehsils of Punjab.
The meeting was informed that the supply of safe drinking water through mobile bottling plants had already begun in remote areas, with operational bottling plants benefiting more than 2,400 families daily. It was also decided that all trucks and plants of the authority would be monitored.
The CM said the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority would be made active and organised on the pattern of Suthra Punjab. “The Safe Drinking Water Project is very close to my heart. Negligence or complacency will not be tolerated. Alongside development projects, the provision of clean drinking water to citizens is my top priority,” she said.
