PPP slams Punjab govt over ‘admin failures’, ‘political interference’

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Monday strongly criticized the Punjab government over its handling of urban flooding, irrigation, wheat procurement and governance, alleging that administrative failures and political interference had caused widespread public suffering and undermined democratic institutions.

Addressing a press conference at the PPP Central Secretariat, PPP Central Information Secretary Nadeem Afzal Chan said the recent rains had exposed the failure of the Punjab government’s “Suthra Punjab” initiative, claiming poor sewerage infrastructure and planning—not heavy rainfall—had caused billions of rupees in losses. He alleged that irrigation had been neglected, warned of an impending wheat crisis, and accused the government of favouring private companies in wheat procurement instead of farmers.

Chan also questioned the transparency of governance and elections, alleging misuse of state machinery during the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections and calling for the protection of democratic institutions and the rights of the people of Kashmir.

Sindh Senior Minister Saeed Ghani also alleged that PPP workers were injured after firing by PML-N supporters during the AJK election campaign and criticised the Election Commission for failing to ensure a level playing field. He also accused the PML-N of pursuing Punjab-centric politics and reiterated the PPP’s demand for the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty and equitable water distribution among provinces.

Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed said the PPP would continue to defend Sindh’s water rights, while the party leadership expressed confidence of victory in the upcoming AJK elections.
