ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to close strategic coordination and regional stability as the two sides reviewed bilateral ties and discussed regional developments, including tensions in the Middle East.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, who called on the premier and also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, developments in South Asia and progress on bilateral cooperation initiatives.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the two sides exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, Afghanistan and the wider region, while also reviewing the implementation of agreements reached between the leadership of Pakistan and China.
Prime Minister Sharif said Islamabad and Beijing attached great importance to close coordination on regional and international issues amid a changing geopolitical environment.
He conveyed greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
Recalling his visit to China in May, the prime minister said both countries would continue working to implement decisions and agreements reached during high-level engagements, adding that cooperation would serve the mutual interests of the two countries and their peoples.
He said the Pakistan-China partnership remained a key pillar of Islamabad’s foreign policy and expressed satisfaction over progress in bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Ambassador Jiang thanked the prime minister for receiving him and reiterated that China considered Pakistan its “iron brother”.
He said Beijing would continue supporting Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Chinese envoy reaffirmed China’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in efforts aimed at promoting socio-economic development and further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch and others.
