ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday welcomed an upgrade of the country’s sovereign credit rating by S&P Global Ratings, calling it a key milestone for the economy and a sign of growing international confidence in the government’s economic reforms.
S&P Global Ratings raised Pakistan’s sovereign credit rating to “B” from “B-”, according to the prime minister’s office, which said the move reflected progress in economic stabilisation efforts, fiscal discipline, reforms and measures to strengthen foreign exchange reserves.
The prime minister said the rating improvement showed that government steps to improve the tax system, reduce the fiscal deficit and stabilise the economy were moving in the right direction.

“The government took difficult but necessary economic decisions, whose positive results are now being recognised globally,” he added.
He said the upgrade would help boost international investor confidence, create new investment opportunities and support Pakistan’s economic growth.
Sharif also praised the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the economic team and relevant institutions for contributing to the achievement.
“The government will continue the journey of economic reforms with full seriousness and commitment to provide Pakistan with sustainable and strong economic foundations,” he added.
