We’re committed to Kashmiris’ right of self-determination: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued diplomatic, political and moral support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, saying the country remained committed to their right to self-determination in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
In a message issued in connection with Youm-e-Ilhaq-e-Pakistan (Kashmir’s Accession to Pakistan Day), being observed today (Sunday), the prime minister said the occasion commemorated the resolution adopted by the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference at its Srinagar session on July 19, 1947.
According to the prime minister, the resolution reflected what he described as the political aspirations of the Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir at the time, expressing their desire for the state’s accession to Pakistan and calling on the then Dogra rulers to respect the will of the people.
He said the resolution remained an important milestone in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the occasion also highlighted the historical, cultural, geographical and religious ties between Pakistan and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and underscored the importance of respecting the freely expressed will of the Kashmiri people.
He said Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir dispute remained unchanged and reiterated that the country supported the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir as envisaged in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
He said the unresolved Kashmir dispute continued to have implications for regional peace and security and maintained that lasting peace in South Asia required its peaceful settlement in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Paying tribute to the courage and resilience of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Sharif said Pakistan would continue to extend diplomatic, political and moral support until they were able to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
