Border management, immigration: Pakistan, China agree to enhance cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China on Friday agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in border management, immigration and institutional coordination.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, flanked by State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry, met with a Chinese delegation led by Chi Jingyang, Director General (DG) of China’s National Immigration Administration, and both agreed to make joint efforts against illegal immigration, arms smuggling, and cross-border crime. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong was also present on the occasion.
According to an official statement issued here, the meeting also decided to give final shape to a bilateral agreement aimed at expediting immigration processes. Both also decided to constitute a joint working group for border management security as well as the enhancement of cooperation with China in immigration management, sea ports, and land borders.
During the meeting, Naqvi said that Pakistan was implementing a zero-tolerance policy against illegal immigration, unlawful border crossings and smuggling, adding that indiscriminate action was being taken against all those involved in such crimes.
The interior minister also said that they aimed to further strengthen security at Khunjerab Pass, where a checkpost of Gilgit Baltistan scouts has been established.
During the meeting, the Chinese delegation commended Pakistan’s measures to prevent illegal border crossings and combat smuggling. DG Chi Jingyang said China and Pakistan were strategic partners and China wanted to further strengthen the cooperation.
