KARACHI: In a major step toward improving urban safety, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has launched a citywide initiative to install high-strength safety nets beneath manhole covers, introducing an additional layer of protection to prevent fatal accidents caused by damaged, displaced or stolen covers.

Karachi Mayor and KWSC Chairman Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the project by inspecting the pilot installation on Tariq Road, where the first safety net was successfully installed and tested. According to KWSC, the specially engineered net can withstand a load of up to 180 kilograms, providing a reliable secondary barrier for pedestrians, particularly children.

The successful pilot marks the beginning of a phased rollout through Karachi.
