CM Punjab launches electric bus service in six more districts
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday in-augurated the electric bus service in six more districts, including Attock, Khushab, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Khanewal, reaffirming her government’s commitment to expand the fleet to 5,000 electric buses across all districts and tehsils of the province.
Addressing the launch ceremony, the chief minister said the electric bus network had now expanded from the northern hill areas of Murree to southern and central Punjab and would be extended to the tehsil level in phases. She announced that around 1,500 more electric buses would be added during the current year, increasing the total fleet to nearly 3,000.
She said Punjab had become the only province in the country providing affordable, high-quality and environmentally friendly public transport to its people. “Wherever additional buses are required, they will be provided without delay,” she added.
She said the government was determined to extend the service to all 147 tehsils of Punjab, assuring the public that the expansion plan would continue at a rapid pace. She said providing the best possible travel facilities at the lowest possible fare remained one of her government’s top priorities.
The chief minister said the state-of-the-art green buses were offering citizens a modern, comfortable and dignified mode of transport for the first time. She noted that commuters could travel anywhere on the route for a fare of just Rs20, making the service highly accessible.
She expressed satisfaction that a large number of women were benefiting from the electric bus service, describing it as a source of personal happiness. “Seeing people travel comfortably to their workplaces, schools and colleges gives me immense satisfaction,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz also appreciated the efforts of the Transport Department and the entire project team for their dedication in making the initiative a success. “I have perhaps never felt greater happiness than I do today while providing this facility to the people,” she said, adding that the journey of public service would continue with the same commitment and dedication.
