Vibrant parliament driving force behind development: Speaker
ISLAMABAD: The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has urged all political stakeholders to rise above partisan differences in the larger national interest and foster cooperation, tolerance, and constructive political dialogue to strengthen democracy and Parliament.
The speaker expressed these views in his message issued here on Monday on the occasion of the World Parliament Day, observed on 30 June under the auspices of the United Nations.
He said that a strong Parliament was the bedrock of a strong, stable, and prosperous Pakistan.
He emphasized that the supremacy of Parliament is pivotal for democratic stability, constitutional supremacy, the rule of law, and public confidence.
A vibrant, transparent, and effective Parliament, he said, laid the foundation for sustainable solutions to public issues and serves as the driving force behind national development.
Emphasizing the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting regional and global peace, stability and development, the speaker observed that stronger inter-parliamentary engagement fostered mutual trust, enhanced understanding, facilitated the exchange of best practices and promoted collaborative legislation among nations.
Such cooperation, he said, contributed significantly to strengthening democratic institutions both regionally and globally.
The speaker said that the National Assembly of Pakistan continued to play a proactive role in upholding democratic values, strengthening constitutional governance, promoting transparent legislation and ensuring effective parliamentary oversight.
He observed that legislation was not merely about passing laws; rather, it was about building a comprehensive, effective and people-centric legal framework that advanced public welfare, social justice, economic prosperity and national cohesion.
He further stated that efforts were underway to further strengthen the role of parliamentary committees in order to make the legislative process more effective, transparent, and result-oriented.
Special emphasis, he noted, was being placed on harnessing modern technology, research, digital systems, and institutional capacity-building to enhance the quality of legislation.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq stressed that in keeping with the demands of a rapidly changing world, Parliament’s responsibilities extended beyond lawmaking. It must also hold the Executive to account effectively and ensure that elected representatives faithfully championed the interests and aspirations of their respective constituencies.
He said that as an active member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the National Assembly of Pakistan continued making meaningful contributions towards promoting democracy, human rights, the rule of law, the political inclusion of women and youth, parliamentary diplomacy and sustainable development at the global level.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment, he stated that the National Assembly would continue working closely with the IPU and other international parliamentary forums to advance global peace, inter-parliamentary cooperation and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
