KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has allocated Rs750 million in its budget to solarise Union Council streets, municipal buildings, and selected public infrastructure across the city as part of its commitment to sustainable urban development and energy efficiency.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the initiative aimed to reduce dependence on conventional electricity, lower operational costs, and ensure uninterrupted civic services, particularly in areas affected by power outages.
“Climate resilience and energy sustainability are essential components of responsible urban governance. Through this initiative, KMC is taking practical steps to reduce electricity costs, minimize its carbon footprint, and improve municipal services,” he said.
The mayor noted that the KMC had already solarized sections of its head office, achieving significant savings in electricity expenditure.
Encouraged by these results, the programme to solarize was now being expanded to Union Council facilities, municipal offices, and public infrastructure across the city.
