In an interesting but important development, the government has “apologized” to power consumers for higher than promised “load management” arising out of lower water availability for power generation. In a statement, the Power Division has reportedly said it is “apologizing for the additional load management necessitated by reduced hydropower availability”.
Although the phrase “load management” is a euphemism for “load-shedding”, the government’s request to power consumers to conserve electricity, particularly during nighttime hours, and to adopt energy-saving practices, must be responded positively by all and sundry in view of the fact that the situation in the region requires all of us to conserve energy in a meaningful manner.
Be that as it may, this act of government of apologizing to power consumers, in my view, brings to mind a famous quote of novelist and teacher Margaret Lee Runbeck. According to her, “An apology is a lovely perfume; it can transform the clumsiest moment into a gracious gift”.
