LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has unearthed electricity theft amounting to millions of rupees during joint operations in its Eastern and South circles.

Officials said the raids were carried out with the assistance of Rangers and police in areas where power was being illegally consumed through direct connections.

In the Eastern Circle, a team led by Superintending Engineer Umar Bilal raided Saggian Wasao village in the Mahmood Booti subdivision in the city. The inspection revealed widespread use of illegal electricity connections across the locality. The consumers were also defaulters of around Rs12.2 million.

According to the LESCO, despite repeated warnings, neither the theft was curtailed nor was the outstanding dues cleared. Consequently, Lesco authorities removed two 200kVA transformers and disconnected power supply to the village.

Separately, in the South Circle, a team headed by Superintending Engineer Muhammad Hussain, along with XEN Amjad Hussain Nagra and SDO Muhammad Waheed, conducted a raid at Chaudhry Shadi Hall in Nishtar Colony with the support of law enforcement personnel.

The team found electricity being stolen through direct connections at the premises. A 100kVA transformer, cables and three meters were seized. A case has been registered against the consumer, who has also been charged for 170,000 units of electricity.

Preliminary estimates suggest the theft caused losses exceeding Rs 12 million. The Lesco authorities said the crackdown on power theft would continue, adding that no one would be allowed to inflict losses on the national exchequer.
