Aamir Awan murder case: Police granted five-day physical remand of suspects

ISLAMABAD: A local court on Wednesday granted the police a five-day physical remand of five suspects, allegedly involved in the murder of a prominent businessman at his farmhouse located in Orchard Scheme during a dacoity on March 30.

Police produced the suspects linked to the murder of Aamir Awan, a businessman and owner of Toyota Motors Islamabad, before judicial magistrate Ahtsham Muqarrab for obtaining their physical remand. The case against the suspect was registered at Shehzad Town police station.

During the hearing, police requested the court to grant eight days physical remands of the accused to recover the weapon used in the murder, as well as stolen valuables from their possession. The court turned down the police’s request and granted only five days’ physical remand of the accused.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till April 6.

According to the FIR lodged at the complaint of Ayesha Awan, the wife of Amir Awan, the incident occurred in the early hours of March 30. She stated in her complaint that she and her husband were present in their bedroom, while their sons, Asad and Aryan Awan, were asleep in separate rooms.

At around 2:45 am, she woke up after hearing noise inside the room and saw three armed suspects scuffling with her husband, while two other accomplices were positioned outside the window. When she raised an alarm, the suspects opened fire with the intention to kill. One bullet struck Amir Awan in the abdomen, leaving him critically injured.

Following the arrest of the suspects, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi told the media that police have arrested five suspects of an inter-provincial gang commonly known as the Mansoor Khan ‘Bulletproof Jacket’ gang alleagely involved in the murder of the businessman.

IGP Rizvi provided further details, stating that following the incident, the city police deployed 17 teams, including the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), cellular technology, geo-fencing, and raiding teams, each assigned specific tasks. He added that both Artificial Intelligence (AI) and human intelligence were used to trace the suspects involved in the tragic incident.

“Police immediately visited the crime scene to collect maximum evidence. The crime occurred in a highly secured farmhouse with sophisticated security measures,” he said.

The IGP said that the geo-fencing team conducted surveillance at six locations and analyzed call data from 137 phone numbers. The investigation team also reviewed footage from 257 Safe City and private cameras and conducted a forensic analysis. In total, 93 individuals were interrogated during the investigation, he said.

The IGP said that 31 raids were conducted across Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and two districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Charsadda and Mardan. “Following analysis of the data, six CIA teams, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), arrested gang leader Mansoor Khan in Charsadda during a raid. Later, the remaining four members of the gang were arrested in Mardan,” he said.

Police recovered a Kalashnikov rifle and a mobile phone, which were snatched by the suspects from the farmhouse’s security guard.

The IGP said that the dacoits opened fire on Awan inside his bedroom when he tried to resist.
