Public-sector employees: Sindh to expand financial assistance
KARACHI: Sindh Government is weighing an expansion of financial assistance and welfare benefits for public sector employees under the Sindh Government Employees Benevolent Fund, officials said after a high-level review on Wednesday.
A cabinet sub-committee meeting, co-chaired by Minister for Labour and Social Security Saeed Ghani, and Minister for Commerce and Industries Jam Ikramullah Dharejo, examined proposals to strengthen the fund’s coverage and payouts.
Senior officials from the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department, the Finance Department and the Benevolent Fund participated.
The committee reviewed existing disbursement mechanisms and flagged the need to enhance support for employees, noting that the fund - financed through monthly salary deductions - currently offers limited assistance, particularly to staff from Grade 1 to Grade 21.
Officials said compensation to families in the event of an employee’s death remains a core component, but payouts under this and other heads are modest and require revision in line with current economic conditions.
Ghani said the panel had been tasked by the provincial cabinet with identifying options to expand benefits and introduce additional welfare measures. “We will finalise actionable recommendations and place them before the cabinet for consideration,” he said.
The proposed changes are part of a broader push to bolster social protection for government employees and improve financial security for their dependents.
