At least 12 people were killed and several others injured after an oil tanker overturned onto a passenger van near Kathor on the outskirts of Karachi on Friday, rescue officials said.

The accident occurred when a passenger bus was reportedly coming from the wrong direction, causing the oil tanker to lose control and overturn onto a smaller passenger van traveling alongside it, Hassaan Ul Haseeb, spokesperson for Rescue 1122 (Sindh), told Business Recorder.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving information through the Central Command and Control center.

“All victims have been shifted to nearby hospitals, and efforts are ongoing to rescue those trapped,” Haseeb said.

He added that oil spilled onto the road after the tanker overturned, complicating the rescue operation. Authorities are planning to cut open parts of the tanker to complete the rescue work, while a crane has been called to remove the vehicle and clear the road.

Traffic in the area was partially disrupted as emergency teams continued operations.
