KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that economic stability is not possible without strengthening the agricultural sector and the Sindh government is taking practical and long term measures for the welfare of growers and tenants.

He was addressing the Sindh Abadgar Forum held at the University of Karachi where a large number of landowners cultivators agricultural experts and students from Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan participated and various issues including increase in agricultural production rising input costs water availability promotion of modern technology market access and policy reforms were discussed in detail.

Nasir Hussain Shah said that he belongs to a farming family and personally understands the problems of the rural economy and added that farmers work day and night to fulfill the food requirements of the country therefore their economic improvement is the top priority of the government.

He said the provincial government has introduced the Hari Card to ensure transparent and direct provision of subsidies and financial assistance so that small and medium scale farmers can receive genuine relief and added that the increase in wheat support price is part of a farmer friendly policy which has enabled growers to receive better returns and strengthened the rural economy.

He further said that significant subsidy is being provided on quality seeds fertilizers and pesticides while progress is also underway on biogas and alternative energy projects to reduce agricultural expenses and promote environment friendly energy.

He said steps have been taken to improve the irrigation system ensure fair distribution of canal water and promote agricultural research to increase per acre yield so that farmers can compete globally and emphasized that modern agricultural technology and mechanization are the need of the time and training programs are being conducted to attract youth towards the agriculture sector.

He assured that policy making will be further improved through consultation with farmers organizations and immediate steps will be taken to resolve the issues faced by growers while participants appreciated the government initiatives and said that agricultural production can be significantly increased through modern farming methods and collective efforts.
