LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Lahore President Faisal Mir has said that, unlike Punjab, people in other provinces are benefiting from functional local government institutions.
Speaking to the media during his visit to Qazi Colony in the Manawan area, where a child fell into a sewer line a day earlier, Mir said the PPP believes that basic public issues should be resolved at peoples’ doorstep which is not possible in the absence of local government institutions.“If there had been a local government system in Lahore today, this incident and the Bhati Gate tragedy would not have occurred,” he remarked. He regretted that two similar incidents involving children falling into sewer lines had occurred in Faisalabad during the past week. Faisal Mir urged Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to ensure that the local government elections in Punjab are held as early as possible.
