ISLAMABAD: A joint sitting of Parliament unanimously passed a resolution expressing solidarity with the victims of Karachi’s Gul Plaza fire and calling for appropriate compensation to the victims’ families and immediate recovery of the affected businesses.

The resolution, agreed upon by both the government and opposition, also urges the Sindh government to introduce reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.

It states, “The Parliament expresses deep sorrow and grief over the fire at Gul Plaza Shopping Mall. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The Parliament also honoured the bravery of fire fighters, particularly Firefighter Furqan Ali, who lost his life during the rescue efforts, and raised concern over shortcomings that worsened the tragedy.

The resolution calls on the Sindh government to; Provide proper compensation to victims’ families and help businesses recover immediately; Conduct a city-wide fire safety check of all commercial and residential buildings; Increase the number of fire stations and firefighting equipment.

It also asks the federal government to support Sindh in dealing with this crisis and assures Karachi’s residents of Parliament’s full solidarity. The resolution emphasizes that the lives lost at Gul Plaza should not be forgotten and demands lasting measures to prevent similar disasters.

PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, speaking in the joint session, supported the resolution and urged the federal government to assist Karachi. She said the tragedy has been “heartbreaking, especially for families awaiting the recovery of their loved ones’ bodies.”

Rehman stressed the need to allocate resources based on population and asked MQM-P not to politicize the tragedy, saying, “Do not add fuel to the fire. Help in the recovery efforts instead of playing politics over dead bodies.”
