Valuable asset: PM praises overseas Pakistanis’ contributions to economy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the contributions of the 12 million Pakistanis living abroad, describing them as a valuable asset to the nation.

He highlighted that their annual remittances, which exceed $38 billion, play a critical role in supporting Pakistan’s economy and sustaining millions of families across the country.

In his message marking International Migrants Day, observed globally on 18 December, Sharif underscored the important role played by overseas Pakistanis as ambassadors of the country’s culture and potential.

He noted that, beyond financial remittances, the true strength of these migrants lies in their skills, hard work, and determination.

The prime minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that individuals preparing to work abroad are equipped with the necessary skills.

“In today’s global economy, success requires not only technical expertise but also social skills and proficiency in foreign languages,” he added.

To address this, he added, the government is aligning its vocational training systems with international standards, while promoting social training and foreign language education to ensure that Pakistan’s workforce is prepared for global opportunities.

In addition to the European Union Talent Partnership, Sharif revealed that Pakistan is working on agreements with various countries to enhance the recognition of overseas Pakistanis’ qualifications and protect their rights through memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

He also mentioned ongoing efforts to ensure safe and dignified journeys for migrants through the introduction of the National Immigration and Welfare Policy, as well as the National Reintegration Policy, which aims to safeguard individuals at every stage of their migration process.

“As we observe this day, let us renew our commitment to equipping those who go abroad with the skills and secure opportunities to contribute to shared development,” he added.

Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks come as International Migrants Day is being observed this year under the theme “My Struggle Story: Cultures and Development,” highlighting the positive impact of human mobility on cultural enrichment, innovation, and sustainable development.
