ISLAMABAD: The Interior Ministry is going to launch an AI-based pilot application in the federal capital in January next year in a bid to curb illegal immigration, said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday.

He said this during a meeting, which was also attended by Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain. Naqvi said the new system would enable authorities to determine in advance whether a person is eligible to travel. He added that the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at tightening travel regulations and improving public facilitation.

The meeting decided that strict measures would be taken to eliminate the use of fake documents for travelling abroad. Officials emphasised that the Protector of Emigrants (POE) issuance system must be made completely foolproof.

The POE stamp — required for all Pakistani citizens travelling abroad for employment — confirms a worker’s visa, contract, and registration while ensuring legal travel and basic life insurance.

Naqvi directed relevant departments to submit final recommendations within seven days, noting that immigration reforms are essential for improving Pakistan’s international standing and enhancing passenger convenience.

The meeting also ordered a robust crackdown against fake visa networks and agent mafias. Naqvi said that after the cancellation of passports belonging to deported individuals, steps will be taken to prevent them from obtaining visas again.

He reiterated that a standardised international driving licence will be issued through the National Police Bureau (NPB), adding that the government will maintain zero tolerance against fraudulent visa practices. He said Pakistan is in contact with other countries to improve the global ranking of its passport.

Chaudhry Salik Hussain said that a fully transparent protector system is the need of the time. It is essential for individuals travelling on labour visas to possess authentic documents, he said, adding that the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis will extend full cooperation to the Ministry of Interior in improving the protector and immigration systems.

The meeting reviewed measures regarding action against illegal migrants and individuals with incomplete documentation. E-driving licences, protector stamps, and immigration matters were discussed in detail.

Secretary and Special Secretary Interior, Secretary Overseas Pakistanis, Chairman National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Director General (DG) Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), DG Passport and Immigration, and representatives from all relevant departments also attended the meeting.
