LAHORE: Punjab Assembly session descended into chaos on Friday after a government member praised Field Marshal General Asim Munir’s appointment as Chief of Defence Forces and launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder.

The session, chaired by Panel of Chairperson Samiullah Khan, began two hours behind schedule and lasted only 90 minutes before being adjourned due to lack of quorum.

Government member Ahsan Raza remarks sparked uproar when he lauded General Asim Munir’s elevation to Chief of Defence Forces, calling him a national hero for defeating India.

Speaking in the House, Raza credited Prime Minister’s patronage under Nawaz Sharif’s guidance for the appointment, saying the entire nation salutes Nawaz Sharif for this decision.

However, controversy erupted when Raza alleged that PTI is leading the country toward decline and accused its imprisoned founder of conspiring against Pakistan and the nation. The remarks triggered immediate protests from opposition benches, with members creating a commotion in the assembly.

During the question hour, Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman responded to queries regarding the Services and General Administration Department. Government member Amjad Ali Javed also praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for permitting the use of Punjabi language in provincial educational institutions.

The session came to an abrupt end when opposition member Imtiaz Sheikh pointed out the quorum.

The government failed to complete the quorum.

Chairperson Samiullah Khan adjourned the proceedings until 2pm on December 8.
