Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen announces exit from franchise

Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen on Tuesday announced that he is stepping away from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, ending his association with the team.

In a statement posted on X, Tareen said being part of Multan Sultans had been “one of the greatest honours” of his life. He added that he cherished the fans, the team, and the opportunity to represent south Punjab.

He wrote that he always reminded players and staff what it meant to represent a region known for its hard-working people. Despite suffering financial losses every season, he said he never considered walking away.

Tareen acknowledged he “may not be everyone’s favourite,” but stressed that he had always been honest and outspoken. He added that if staying meant compromising his principles, he would rather leave with dignity than continue under pressure.

Calling the decision an “ending,” he urged fans to remember that the team “has always belonged to the people of south Punjab.” He asked supporters to extend the same passion to whoever takes over the franchise next.

It should be noted that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered renewal contracts to five of the six PSL franchises, barring Sultans, due to an ongoing spat with Tareen.
Tareen has been quite vocal against PSL management’s policies.
