Karachi is witnessing a worrying rise in the cases of infectious diseases such as dengue, malaria, typhoid, and jaundice. The situation has become increasingly serious in several parts of the city, with hospitals struggling to manage the growing number of patients affected by multiple infections.

A friend of mine who lives in my Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighborhood has been suffering from dengue for over a month. Her condition worsened when she was also diagnosed with malaria, typhoid, and jaundice. These combined illnesses severely weakened her body, and her lungs even filled with water, leading to critical complications. Witnessing her battle for recovery has been deeply distressing and highlights the gravity of the situation many citizens are facing.

Across Karachi, numerous residents are falling ill due to poor sanitation, stagnant rainwater, and irregular fumigation. The lack of proper drainage and waste management continues to create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding and the spread of infectious diseases.

Authorities must take immediate measures, including consistent fumigation drives, improved sanitation, and public awareness campaigns. Citizens should also play their part by keeping their surroundings clean and preventing stagnant water accumulation.

This growing health crisis underscores the importance of achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being – to ensure access to proper healthcare and a clean environment for all.
