KARACHI: The Sindh government announced that double-decker buses and new electric buses will be on Karachi’s roads from next week. New routes for the People’s Bus Service will also be opened in other districts of Sindh.

A key meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department was held in Karachi, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon.

Officials briefed the meeting on the progress of the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects, the upcoming launch of the EV taxi service in the megacity and the second phase of the Pink Scooties scheme.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said he expects the double-decker and electric buses to arrive in Karachi by next week and that new routes for them are being prepared.

He said the Sindh government plans to launch the EV taxi service by December and add another five hundred buses during the current financial year. He said that new People’s Bus Service routes in other districts will start soon. He instructed officials to finalise all operational preparations for the new routes and to begin Scooties training for women and female students at all divisional headquarters.

He also directed them to speed up work on the Yellow Line BRT, complete depots quickly and ensure timely utility transfers so the project’s pace is not affected.

Memon added that work on the second part of the Taj Haider Bridge will begin soon and that two-way traffic has started on the bridge from today.

Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro and Project Director of the Yellow Line BRT Zameer Abbasi attended the meeting.
