ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is a sub judice matter and the House will take no further action until the court issues its decision.

During Tuesday’s session of the National Assembly, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq made observations regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition. He said that the matter is currently sub judice, and therefore, the House will await the court’s decision before taking any further steps on the issue.

While referring to his meeting with former Speaker Asad Qaiser and MNA Amir Dogar, the Speaker informed the House that the matter of appointing the Leader of the Opposition has been sent back by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to the Peshawar High Court, where it is presently under consideration.

He said that the matter would be taken up in the Assembly once the court delivers its verdict. He further noted that several MNAs had their parliamentary memberships restored following judicial decisions.

Commenting on the Opposition’s non-participation in the Standing Committees, the Speaker remarked that despite the absence of the Opposition members, the committees continue to function regularly. He added that committee meetings are convened as per requisitions from members, and the parliamentary business is proceeding without interruption.

The Speaker said that Opposition members have been provided opportunities to present their recommendations in committees, including the Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

He recalled that during the 26th Constitutional Amendment, several proposals from the Opposition were incorporated into the legislation. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq urged Opposition members to actively participate in the proceedings of the Standing Committees to strengthen the democratic and legislative process.
