The government, in its bid to curb human smuggling and facilitate immigration, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application, and its pilot project will be launched at Islamabad Airport.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) developed the app at the direction of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, read an official statement on Friday.

‎Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the FIA Headquarters in Islamabad and chaired a high-level meeting.

The meeting reviewed progress on the decisions taken in the previous session regarding modernising FIA. He was briefed on the AI-based app designed to simplify immigration procedures and counter human trafficking.‎‎Naqvi appreciated the app and termed it the need of the hour.

“This initiative would not only help stop human trafficking but also save passengers from waiting in long queues,” the minister was quoted as saying.

Naqvi directed that immediate funds be provided to improve FIA’s IT infrastructure.

The interior minister also ordered the urgent upgradation of the FIA Headquarters building. He instructed CDA to hand over the newly allotted land for the FIA Academy to the agency without any delay.

‎‎In view of staff shortages, the federal minister directed that recruitment against all approved vacant posts be started immediately. He assured that all necessary resources will be provided.

‎‎Director General FIA Raja Riffat Mukhtar briefed the minister that work on the necessary amendments in the FIA Act has been completed.

He further apprised that digitisation is being pursued on a priority basis.

The organisation has shifted to an e-office system within a short time, and all FIA notices will now be issued with QR codes.

The development follows broader government efforts to integrate AI into governance.

Last month, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) unveiled Pakistan’s “first-ever” AI-based Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS).

The new system, aimed at enhancing transparency, reducing human intervention, and facilitating trade, is expected to enhance the efficiency of import-export operations.
