KARACHI: The country's jewellery makers on Wednesday showed concerns over a steep rise in electricity tariffs, demanding for the rollback of the recent increase of over Rs7 per unit.

Citing historic inflation in the country, Chairman All Pakistan Jewellery Manufactures Association, Muhammad Arshad sought a cut in power rates to the consumers.

With Ramadan approaching, he emphasised the tradition of providing relief to Muslims during this blessed month and called for immediate government action.

“The notification for the hike should be withdrawn, as the additional burden of Rs66 billion is unsustainable for the public,” he added.

The increase, he said, not only affected the common household budget but also directly impacts the business community, exacerbating economic challenges for traders as well.

Arshad urged the new government to address these issues promptly, highlighting the deteriorating economic situation and its adverse effects on businesses.

He warned that the increase in electricity and gas prices could further deteriorate the business environment, urging the government to prioritize the welfare of both the public and the business community.
