Priyantha lynching case: ATC awards death sentence to six, life imprisonment to 9

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Monday handed down death sentence to six on two counts, life imprisonment to nine, five-year to one and two-year each to 72 accused persons for lynching a Sri Lankan citizen Priyantha Kumara Diyawadana over blasphemy allegations in Sialkot.

The court; however, acquitted an accused Bilal from the charges. ATC Gujranwala Presiding Judge Natasha Naseem announced this verdict inside Kot Lakhpat jail.

Secretary Prosecution Punjab Nadeem Sarwar shared details of the verdict outside the jail with the media persons. The accused who were awarded death penalty included Taimur, Abdul Rehman, Muhammad Irshad, Ali Husnain, Abu Talha and Muhammad Humair. A fine of Rs 2 lakh had also been imposed on each convict.

The nine who were given life imprisonment included Rohail Amjad, Muhammad Shoaib, Ihtesham Zaib, Imran Riaz, Sajid Ameen, Zaigham Mehdi, Ali Hamza, Luqman Haider and Abdul Saboor. They were also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lac each.
