Opposition protests against non-fixing of wheat price

LAHORE: The opposition in Punjab Assembly on Wednesday protested against for not fixing the official price of wheat at Rs 2000 per maund. The members of the opposition and treasury benches chanted slogans against each other’s leadership.

The session started 2 hours 26 minutes late under the chair of Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi.

While speaking on the point of order, Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said that federal government was not honouring a unanimous resolution passed by the Punjab government for fixing the support price of wheat at Rs 2000 per maund.

Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary leader Syed Hassan Murtaza suggested that government should establish Chamber of Agriculture on the pattern of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Both Rana Iqbal and Syed Hassan Murtaza said that more than eighty percent members were agriculturists.

While responding to the opposition’s criticism, Law Minister Raja Basharat said that opposition remark was not based on reality. The resolution passed by opposition regarding fixing of support price of wheat could not reach Islamabad. He said if the speaker gave the permission he will present the list of those who looted billions of farmers.
