'Long Covid'

28 Oct, 2020

Business Recorder op-ed writer Dr Omer Javed has been presenting highly informed and very-well researched perspectives on a variety of issues, particularly those relating to economy and governance. In his latest contribution to the newspaper, titled 'Long Covid' and deep economic recession', he has provided a lot of food for thought for our economic policy makers to look deeper into the situation with a view to coming up with some creative solutions aimed at improving the state of economy of Pakistan.

According to the writer, for example, "... while in developed countries the impact of public investment on economic growth has traditionally been quite significant given their strong institutional fundamentals, the developing countries will have to make a larger effort in terms of not only raising the level of public investment, but also drastically enhancing the quality of public economic institutions, through providing better governance and incentive structures, for both underlying organizations and markets. ..."

This is about time our policymakers told the nation the whole truth about how Covid-19 will be playing out in coming weeks and months as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) have already lowered growth projections for Pakistan.
