US President Donald Trump in the final US presidential election debate said that the air in India is 'filthy', prompting a swift reaction from Indians on social media.

"Look at China, how filthy it is. Look at Russia, look at India -- it’s filthy. The air is filthy," Trump said at the debate in Nashville. Immediately, the hashtag #FilthyIndia and Howdy, Modi was trending on social media.

Several users took to Twitter and took a jibe at PM Narendra Modi who addressed the "Howdy, Modi!" event in Houston with Trump last year. Congress leader Kapil Sibal was among several who took a jibe at Modi after Trump's 'filthy' comment.

Several users accused Trump of betrayal, saying that India spent millions on the 'Namaste Trump' rally in Ahmedabad. Another user also referred to Trump's visit saying the government did a lot of arrangements for his visit and now Trump has termed them 'filthy'.

However, there were several who agreed with Trump, saying that Trump speaks the truth and India's air is an awful global embarrassment.
