Kidnapping of journalist: IGP submits SIT report in SC

ISLAMABAD: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, on Wednesday submitted Special Investigation Team (SIT) report about kidnapping of senior journalist, Matiullah Jan, in the Supreme Court.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed will resume hearing today (Thursday) of the suo motu pertaining to the alleged contemptuous tweet by Matiullah.

The journalist was reportedly abducted by men in plainclothes and some in uniforms of the anti-terrorism police on July 21st from Islamabad's G-6/1-3 sector, but was found near Fateh Jang Road late at night and returned home safely.

A video purported to be of the kidnapping, sparked an outcry on the social media.

The report said that the SIT under the chairmanship of the DIG Operations was constituted to probe the matter, and the police added Section 7ATA to the case.

Aabpara Police Station on the complaint of Matiullah's younger brother Shahid Abbasi had registered an FIR against unknown persons for kidnapping in the morning and releasing him late at the night the same day.

The report said that the geo fencing of the place of the occurrence to trace out the culprits allegedly involved in the kidnapping of the journalist is still under process.

The Ministry of Defence was approached to ascertain the whereabouts of the alleged kidnapee from IB, MI, and ISI, so that the investigation of the case could be conducted on merits.

On 24 July 2020, the CCTV footage of the alleged suspects was also sent to the NADRA for matching and provision of information of suspects, which is still under process.

The statement of school teacher, Ritaba Sehar, who was seen in the video, was also recorded under Section 161 CrPC.

Efforts are underway to trace out the culprits involved in the incidents.

The reports of various departments are awaited.
